Need an address plate for your home? We did and so I decided to make our own. I happened to be at Lowe’s and noticed these pre-formed Wainscoting moulding frame. It just happened to be the perfect length and width to fit around five 4 x 4 inch tiles. Wahoo! Perfect.
Since the frame was backless, I cut out a piece of 1/4 inch PDF board {the same wood we used on our Wainscoting here} to the same measurements of the moulding frame…7 x 23 inches.
Then I glued the frame to the PDF board with Gorilla Wood Glue and set it with some clamps to hold it in place and let it dry overnight.
The next day, I spray painted the frame with black Satin Krylon Spray Paint {my favorite brand of Spray Paint}. It took three coats. Let the paint cure for at least 12 hours.
Then I centered my tiles, 3 light colored tiles and 2 darker colored tiles, inside the frame where I wanted them to sit. Then I took one tile out at a time and glued each one into place with painters caulk. Then made slight adjustments to each till they were perfectly centered. Let this sit overnight so that it has time to dry completely. This may take up to 24 hours.
Then I used my Silhouette machine and cut out some black vinyl letters and some flourish designs for the sides. The numbers are 2 inches in height in a Times New Roman font. I cut my vinyl on a 7 thickness.
If you don’t have a Silhouette, you can use a numbered stencil or print out your numbers on your computer and cut out the number to make your own stencils. Then simply paint the numbers onto your tiles. You can use the enamel paint like I used on these Monogrammed Mugs or just use a regular toll paint.
Then display your new address plate so people can find your home. We haven’t quite decided where to hang our new address plate yet. I am debating on hanging it by the front door, over the garage or on our brick mailbox.
Where would you hang yours?
Instead of house numbers you could do a version of this for your name or your child’s name or a holiday saying with a limit of 5 words for these exact dimensions, or if you found or made a longer frame you could include more words! Oh….the possibilities!

Thanks Susie!
You made this project look very simple! I just may attempt it. Thanks for the tutorial.
It is really pretty easy. Especially because the frame fits the tiles perfectly! If you make one, I would love to see a picture!
Awsome…we are in need of something to cover up the number plate we have…I might be able to actually reuse it now and make something great! Thanks for the inspiration!!!
That is a great idea especially if you don’t like the one you already have.
LOVE THIS! Thanks for sharing! I must do this with our last name! :) TGIF
I wish I had a shorter last name! I am on the look out for a longer frame or I just might have to make one myself!
JUST what I’ve been waiting for!!!! :D this is PERFECT!!! :D
I’m totally going to do this! :D {some day!} ;)
I love this!! Our house numbers are embedded into the brick on a diagonal. I wish they were horizontal or vertical so I could make one of these to go over them. Now I have to search the house to figure out where one of these awesome guys can go….hmmmmmm!
Best of luck in your searching!
Great idea! I have a set of 4 tiles that were given to me with words on them. They have been leaning against the back of my dresser for over a year. I kept watching for a mini plate holder or something else to actually get them up on the wall. This idea is so much better! Thanks for sharing!
Glad I could help you find a use for them!
I am working on mine right now. Great idea. Thanks,Tess
Amy, this is such a gorgeous idea–I love it!! I just had to take a minute to tell you THANK YOU. It was so amazing to meet you, even if it was only for a brief few minutes yesterday. You have always been an inspiration to me. Besides being one of the very first blogs I ever followed, I have always admired you for the classy way you blog. You handle everything so beautifully and have been a great blogging model for me. What a fabulous opportunity it was to learn from you and other inspiring bloggers!
Thank you so much Alison! You are too kind. It was good to meet you to and I wished we could have gotten to know each other better to. Glad we got to meet though and now I will know who I am actually talking ot as well! :)
I love this idea! What did you use to fill in the gaps between the tiles? The picture looks like you used something dark blue, but maybe it’s just the light
It is empty. I did not fill it with anything.
I am just getting into the swing of things with my silhouette- I was wondering, does the vinyl hold up in the summer or does it peel off?
I tried finding the frame you described at Lowe’s and unfortunately had no luck. Any suggestions without going broke for a frame? Love your idea!!
oh no! The ones at my Lowes are in the molding aisle. You could pick up some old used frames at a thrift shop. Or you could just cut them out of moldings if you have a saw or supplies!
Amy – I can’t find this at Lowe’s either. Was there are SKU # or part # on the moulding package?
thanks,
Sue
Sorry, this is an old post. I don’t have the sku number.
